1) What is Botulinum Toxin?
The injection contains a muscle relaxant obtained from the bacterium
Clostridium botulinum. It is a naturally occuring protein which has been purified.
2) Side Effects?
In general, botulinum toxin injections are very safe. For example, children with spasticity are given much higher doses (sometimes up to 20 times) than those used for wrinkle relaxation. It is so safe that even if it were accidentally directly injected into an artery it would be immediately broken down with no side effect to the patient. The only real significant side effect is if the product were to migrate to an adjacent muscle group after injection. This is extremely rare and worst case senario may be relaxation of the wrong muscle group for a several weeks.
3) What can I expect
Here at Alpha cosmedic clinic we make every effort to ensure your comfort. We have several techniques for making the injections almost painless. You can expect the first signs of relaxation to start about 3 days after your initial injection, with the full effect occurring in about 12 days and lasting 3-4 months if the correct dose is given. After several injections done regularly to a particular area you can even expect skin tightening as the muscles underneath start contracting from disuse. Many patients report that after several years of regular injection they save money as the effects last longer, even up to six months.
4) When shouldn't i use botulinum toxin injection?
Botulinum toxin injection must not be used if:
- you have an infection in the muscles where it would normally be injected
- you have any muscle disorders in other parts of your body, including myasthenia gravis, EatonLambert Syndrome or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- you are taking aminoglycoside antibiotics
- you have inflammation or severe weakness in the muscles where botulinum would be injected
- you are pregnant or have the intention of becoming pregnant
- you are breast feeding or planning to start breast feeding
- you have angle closure glaucoma
- you are taking drugs that may interfere with muscle function
