Stimulate Regeneration - Reduced Downtime

The CO2 Laser was first used for medical purposes in 1976, and soon after became the standard for skin resurfacing. Complete skin resurfacing (100%) had excellent results, trouble was that it required prolonged downtime of over a month, it was very painful, requiring a general anaesthetic to have the procedure done, and it was very expensive. Fractional resurfacing was invented in 2003 to try to overcome these problems. The aim is to create regularly spaced microscopic columns of ablation, leaving skin in between untouched.The reservoir of spared skin allows rapid repair of the injury caused by the laser. The analogy to this is the grass in your backyard, if you were to remove all of it, it would take quite a while to grow back, but by only removeing 25% and leaving regular islands of normal grass to grow out from, the grass will grow back alot quicker. Interestingly, this is exactly what curators of bowling greens do yearly to keep them in good shape.

Although Fractional resurfacing takes two to three treatments to approach the results obtained by complete resurfacing, it has now become much more popular than latter due to much reduced downtime and side effects. The original fractional machines used a lower frequancy (1450 - 2700nm they were not CO2: 10.000nm), and were much less effective. There are still many of these machines performing treatments right now, but the results are limited and many more treatment sessions are required. The higher frequency of the CO2 leads to complete vaporisation of the tissue within the holes, this has the effect of inducing immediate skin tightening and stimulating collagen growth. We also see improvements in the skin's texture and tone. Only the CO2 frequency has been proven to break up the layer of broken collagen and elastin fibres which build up in our skin as we age. In a recent split face study comparing fractional CO2 to fractional Erbium, significantly greater improvement in peri-ocular wrinkles (75%) occurred on the side treated with CO2 laser as compared to the Erbium side (25%).

The number of sessions required on average varies with each condition as follows:

Fine wrinkles : 1 - 2 sessions

Deepwrinkles: 2 - 5 sessions

Acne Scars : 2 - 7 sessions

Stretch Marks : 2 - 7 sessions

Light scarring : 2 - 7 sessions

Once the clinical result has been acheived a top up can be done to maintain the result every 5-10 years (only needed for skin tightening)..

As can be seen from the above graph, new collagen is laid down by skin cells called fibroblasts and this begins at one month after the procedure and continuues up until 6 months after the procedure. There is immediate shrinkage due to vaporisation of the tissue. In order to obtain optimal shrinkage and wrinkle reduction we recommend the first three treatment intyervals as follows: 0, 2months,6months.

No Consumables
Other fractional laser systems require expensive consumables. The SmartXide DOT has no consumables which provides you, the patient, with a more cost effective treatment in comparison to practices that need to cover the cost of consumables such as new handpieces, for each treatment.
